Kids Routine Flip Chart Tutorial

I hate yelling at my kids, especially in the mornings. I want to be able to start my day, peacefully. The constant, “put on your shirt!”, “brush you teeth!”, “stop wasting time, Hurry!”, “where are your socks”, was starting to affect my personality, making me very agitated and affect my relationship with the kids. So I needed a solution – well, a schedule rather. I no longer wanted to be running upstairs to grab socks for a kid as they walked out the door. I also need time to make breakfast and lunch for the kids. And I want the kids, who are now old enough, to start praying. To satisfy all my needs and wants, I had to come up with a schedule that was easy enough for the kids to follow and somewhat interactive that they would want to use it. After a lot of trial and error, I stumbled upon this idea on Pinterest. My kids loved it! So, we decided to make it a permanent addition to our home. Here’s how we made it…Disclaimer: I did not come up with this idea. In fact, the original post can be found Here.

For this project, you will need:

  1. One 12×12 cardstock
  2. Glue stick, or tape runner
  3. Paper trimmer and/or scissors
  4. Corner punch
  5. Self adhesive magnetic strips
  6. Pictures, clip art, text, etc
  7. Scoring board (optional)

1. Cut down the 12×12 cardstock to 12×8 and score at 3inch. If you don’t have a scoring board, mark a line at 3 inches front the edge of the cardstock and fold it. (see image 1)
2. Using either scissors or a paper trimmer, make cuts 2 inches apart up to the fold (see image). This will create six 2×3 inch sections. (see image 2)

3. Next, cut up the images and text you like to use for the flip chart. I used clip art images from google and sized them at approximately 1 inch in length. If you would like to use the images that I used, please click here – Kids Routine Flip Chart. (see image 3)

And glue them to your chart.

*I printed out the text that coordinated with the pictures – but if your kids want to hand write them, it’s a great way to include them in this process. We had originally did that, but our charts accidentally ripped when we tried to take them down to paint the wall. So, this time, I decided to make them by myself rather than a family event so that the kids can resume using their charts asap.

4. Using a corner punch, shape all the edges as shown in the image below. (see image 5)

5. Then, add the self adhesive magnetic strips cut into approximately 1/2 inch pieces. One you’ve added one piece, cut another piece approximately the same size and lay it adhesive side up. This is the easiest way to get the second magnet in its right place. Fold the flap to stick the second magnet in its place. (see image 6)

6. Print, cut and glue “done” to the back of the flaps. You can download my version here –> Done Stickers for Routine Chart.

7. Finally, add a title to your chart, and mount it on your wall for daily use.

***I used 4 command mounting strips (that hold up to 2 lbs) to mount each flip chart to the wall.
