Kids Crafts and Activities for Ramadan Iftar Parties

As we prepare for a weekend of Ramadan Iftar parties, let’s not forget our little ones who are also very excited for this month. Children do not enjoy parties the same way we adults do. While the samosas and dressing up was an integral part of my childhood memory, children today require a little more in order to be motivated to keep away from their devices. A Ramadan craft station at an Iftar party makes the event extra special for the little ones in our families. My kids look forward to parties where they know there will be activities and crafts in addition to the delicious food.

If you are planning to throw a Ramadan Iftar party, please remember to include a couple of activities to entertain the children. Here are some simple craft ideas we have used in the past for our own Iftar parties. Items purchased online will be linked.

Make a Ramadan Bookmark

acs_0101-2949795726-1557426946671.jpgSince Quran is such an integral part of the month of Ramadan, making bookmarks to be used in the Quran just makes the most sense. Bookmarks can be simple or as elaborate you want with just a few key tools you can preorder and/or make. It’s cheap, easy and suited for several age groups. Thus, has been one of the most successful of our Ramadan craft ideas. I’ll first share what we did, then give you simpler alternatives.

What you need:

White precut bookmarks (hygloss) 2×6

Different die cut shapes (you’ll have to do this ahead of time using few different craft punches of your choice)

Stickers

Gemstone stickers (if NOT laminating)

Coloring medium (crayons, color pencils, markers, etc)

Tassels (2 inch)

Bookmark laminating sleeve (5mil) (optional) or laminating sleevel (3mil)

Hole punch (if laminating)

Laminator (optional)

Directions:

Have an age appropriate volunteer to help you laminate. Our volunteer was 14 years old. Have a basket of bookmarks as well as all the items needed to embellish the bookmark out on the table. I kept the bookmarks and tassels with me and the children had to ask me for them (this way I avoided wastage). I also put out a few framed quotes to inspire the kids. Some even chose to write them on their bookmark. Once the kids have decorated their bookmarks, have an adult (or responsible teen) laminate it using the pouch (do NOT let the younger kids have access to this), hole punch and attach a tassel.

A simple version: cut card stock in 4 equal parts (each piece measuring approximately 2-1/8inches x 11in) and let the kids decorate. There are also free Ramadan bookmark printables available (just do a quick google search). Print, cut (or don’t cut) and let the kiddos decorate as their little hearts desire.

Make a Tasbeeh (prayer beads)

img_5254You can’t go wrong with a tasbeeh craft for Ramadan, it’s a fun, cheap and easy craft to put together. Kids love making bead necklaces (or tasbeehs in this case) no matter how many times they’ve done it. All you need are beads (pony beads, seed beads or any bead of your choice) and yarn (or even a ribbon- I couldn’t find the yarn). String the beads together, either make a 100 bead tasbeeh or a 33 bead tasbeeh. Tie a double knot when you are done, and add a few beads either of a different shape, color or design on the ends as shown in the picture. To close off the tasbeeh, add a DIY yarn pom pom, tassel or just tie a double knot like I’ve done. Again, those minor details that will be little concern to the little ones. They can enjoy using the beads right away or save them for Eid prayer.

Coloring with Tissue Paper

Because just coloring a masjid would be too easy, we added in a little fun. Precut colored wrapping tissue (easily available at the dollar store), in to 1-2 inch squares- this doesn’t need to be exact. Have kids apply liquid glue using either a brush or a Q-tip, ball up the tissue paper squares (or use the back of a pencil to create flat cone shapes) and stick them onto the masjid printout. Free masjid printouts are easily available by doing a quick Google search. Alternatively you can place a dot of glue on the bottom of the balled tissue paper and adhere it to the masjid. This is an easy Ramadan craft that keeps kids happily engaged.

DIY Eid Banner

Eid bunting banners are A great craft for any age group. The best part about this Ramadan craft is that it can be used as decoration for Eid. This craft also like many others can also be simple or as Complex as you want. For a simple version just print out the free banner printable in the desired design, let the kids color and design it and cut it. They can use washy tape to add the banners in their home or if you would like them to add a ribbon to it for easy hanging, keep a few hole punches so that the kids can punch holes on the ends of the banner pieces and thread a ribbon through the entire banner. Alternatively, you can cut out each piece and use it as a template and have the children trace it on scrapbook paper or card stock of their choice and create a more elegant custom design. My suggestion would be to cut the bunting triangles or flags in scrapbook paper, then use the 3 inch or 2 inch circle craft punch to cut circles on card stock in your color of choice. You can use foam stickers or have the kids hand write the lettering inside the cut circles. Click one either of the banner designs for the free printable or click HERE (for the triangle one) or HERE (for the flag design).

Eid Cards

I love making Eid cards as a Ramadan Craft, because it gets kids excited for completing their fasting. Eid is a festival all kids look forward to, and in this digital era, sending handmade Eid cards adds an extra special touch. Just like the bookmark, you will need a variety of different stickers shapes and embellishments along with coloring medium for the kids to decorate either white or colored card stock or pre-folded cards. Alternatively you can also find free printables of Eid card designs that you can print on card stock and have available for the kids to color, create and take home.

Hanging Ramadan or Eid Decorations

Another fun and simple Ramadan craft that can be used as home decorations are hanging crescent moon and star mobiles. Using either card stock or foam sheets, have children cut out crescent moon and stars using the template (click HERE to download). Print smaller templates to create a garland or bigger templates for individual hangings. You can even join the star to the moon when tracing, although this makes it more difficult for little ones to cut. Also please note that foam sheets are harder to cut and hole punch. Also, glitter makes this craft even more gorgeous (or glitter foam sheets).

Color your own Table Runner

Kids don’t need fancy tablescapes, just a few crayons laid on top of a long white roll of paper (serving as the table runner) will do. Let their creative juices flow and keep them occupied while they enjoy their Iftar (or wait for their adult caregivers to finish so they can go home to bed – heeheee). This was also crowd pleaser and not limited to a particular age group.
