November Book recommendations for 9 year olds

Big A loves reading. In fact, she was the first of her siblings to develop a love for books. She loves getting lost in a good book. Even though she can read and re-read a book a hundred times and still enjoy it the same way she did the first time she read it, I always need to add new books to our collection every now and then with new treasures for her uncover. I always find myself struggling to look for new books, or book series that she would enjoy, and hopefully learn from. To make it easier on other parents struggling to find good books to enrich their children with, Big A has put together her November favorite 5 list for girls (AND BOYS) 9 years of age.

Wonder1. Wonder

by: R. J. Palacio

This book has a strong message. The main character, August, is a 5th grader with facial deformity. He starts school after being homeschooled his entire life. August overcomes many challenges in his first year, however, the most important is the way he deals with getting bullied. In the book, the main character’s older sister has a boyfriend. There is an entire section titled Boyfriend, and in one part the young boyfriend-girlfriend couple share a kiss. There is also a few mentions of alcohol. However, overall Big A and I highly recommend this book.

2. Malory TowersMalory Towers

by: Enid Blyton

One of Big A’s new favorite author is Enid Blyton. We stumbled upon this book after reading two other book series from the same author. It’s a story about the experiences at a girls’ boarding school. In the first six books, the story revolves around the main character, Darrell. The remaining six books in the series is about Darrell’s little sister, Felicity. Big A loves this series because “it’s funny”.

3Amal Unbound. Amal Unbound

by: Aisha Saeed

This is a story of a girl from a Pakistani village that is forced to become a servant to help pay off her father’s debt at just 12 years of age. Although this story is a little sad, it was very captivating for Big A. The main character , Amal, was relatable to Big A. She found Amal to be similar to herself. Just like her, Amal is the eldest of several siblings and is a big help to her mother. The story is inspiring and shares a reality that kids here in the United States are sheltered from.

4. The Famous FiveThe Famous Five

by: Enid Blyton

This is Big A’s latest addiction. She is in love with books about adventures. This book is part of a series of over 20 book. This series shares the adventures of four young children and their dog.

The Circus of Adventure5. The Circus of Adventure

by: Enid Blyton

This series has a total of eight books. This is one of Big A’s favorites from that series. It has both drama and adventure. Three of the four main characters, 2 girls and a boy, get captured along with a prince. The fourth main character, a boy, has to save them. The story is about the adventures he faces in his search to save his friends.
