7 Activities for an Indoor Relay Race

Looking for a fun and easy way to keep kids entertainment during school breaks? An indoor relay race is the perfect indoor activity for a cold winter day or any other time when you want to stay indoors.

Everything I needed to set up this indoor activity was purchased from either the dollar store, created at home, or used from around the house.

Before starting the race, explain to the kids that although this is a relay race, it’s more about enjoying the race than winning. I feel it’s extremely important to stress that to kids. By explaining this ahead of time, I was able to prevent the waterworks. In fact, the kids actually helped each other upon completing their stations.

To set up the indoor relay, you will need the following items:

  1. Jigsaw Puzzles (24-piece)
  2. Plastic cups (10-20 per person)
  3. Tumble tower stacking wood blocks (dollar tree version of Jenga blocks)
  4. Small orange cones
  5. Glow bracelets (2 per ring), or plastic rings
  6. Pencil (1 per child)
  7. Free printable (click Here to download)

How to Set up

To set up the relay race, designate separate areas for each activity so that the child has to run/walk to each station after completing it.

Station 2:

A 24-piece puzzle from dollar tree. I used a different puzzle for each child, but if you wanted, you could keep them all the same. For younger kids, choose a simpler puzzle.

Station 3:

Stacking cups. Have a tower of stacking cups with the top most cup being of a different color, or marking. The children must remove each cup from the top and place it at the bottom of the stack. Continue removing one cup at a time until the marked cup returns to the top of the stack.

Station 5:

Jenga blocks. The children must use the Jenga blocks to make the “tallest” tower.

Station 6:

Ring toss. This is rings used for the ring toss were created by joining two glow bracelets.

Station 7:

The last station in the relay is a secret message decoding worksheet.

To make it extra fun, add a bell near the last station so that the kids have something to signify completing all the stations.

Here are some other ideas you can use for stations

    Building a LEGO structure
    Math worksheets
    Sorting exercises
    Laundry folding
    Eating a fruit/ veggie

Of course, these are just suggestions, the possibilities are actually endless.

I hope your kids enjoy the indoor relay race as much as mine did. If you use this indoor activity to keep the kids entertained, please snap a picture and tag me on social media
