Montessori Coin Box Tutorial

One of my favorite montessori activities for 12-18 months is the coin box. Really, it’s because there’s so much nostalgia associated with this activity, for me.

When my eldest was born, 10 years ago, the hubby and I were just starting out and couldn’t really afford much of anything, let alone, expensive montessori materials for a baby. In those days, the montessori materials were not as easily accessible as they are now thanks to amazon as well as the many montessori online shops that exist now. I wanted my daughter to have the coin box but since I couldn’t afford it, I decided to make it. It was one of the activities I could keep in the diaper bag since it was small and lightweight. Big A spent many doctors appointments, parties and even an 18 hour plane ride engaging I this activity.

I no longer have the original box I made. Recently, I wanted to introduce this activity to my toddler club for 12-28 month olds. However, purchasing a coin box for each of the 10 kids in the club was pricier than I had bargained for. So, having had the experience of making this years ago, I decided to undertake the task of making them. I made a total of 10 boxes. The coin box is inspired by the montessori coin box but doesn’t contain the exact same elements as the original. However, it achieves the same outcome.

Unlike the montessori coin box, this coin box does NOT have a drawer. Instead the coins can be retrieved simply by opening the latched lid of the box. Also, the coins used are multicolored unlike the standard blue coins of the Montessori box. Other than that, it’s the same.

To make this box, here’s what you will need:Continue reading “Montessori Coin Box Tutorial”

Fall themed Storybook Party

img_8658

Fall is the perfect time for a themed party here in South Florida. Here are details of how I plan and execute my Storybook Costume Parties for kids.

LOCATION: My Home

TIME: Immediately after Maghrib

I had limited space to work with, so I asked everyone to pray at home.

MENU: Pot luck style

DECOR: All things FALL.

To decorate for the theme, I used a variety of different pumpkins, fall leaves, burlap, and hay bales. The foam pumkins and leaf garland were all bought from Hobby Lobby. The hay bales were from Joann.com. Everything else came from Amazon, because its just so much easier than having to shop with little kids. I will link all my purchases at the bottom of the post plus additional decor pieces that I intend to stock up on next year. The only item I could not link were my fitted tablecovers.Continue reading “Fall themed Storybook Party”

November Book recommendations for 9 year olds

Big A loves reading. In fact, she was the first of her siblings to develop a love for books. She loves getting lost in a good book. Even though she can read and re-read a book a hundred times and still enjoy it the same way she did the first time she read it, I always need to add new books to our collection every now and then with new treasures for her uncover. I always find myself struggling to look for new books, or book series that she would enjoy, and hopefully learn from. To make it easier on other parents struggling to find good books to enrich their children with, Big A has put together her November favorite 5 list for girls (AND BOYS) 9 years of age.Continue reading “November Book recommendations for 9 year olds”

October Book Recommendations for 6 year olds

I asked my six year to recommend 5 of her favorite books… I have to be honest, other than the first book, these are not the books she is currently reading, in fact she hasn’t read them in over a year. However, these are the books she recommended:Continue reading “October Book Recommendations for 6 year olds”

School Lunch Ideas

The answer to the famous question… “What do you give your child for lunch?”

Here are some ideas for kids lunches. Using cookie cutters, colors, and food picks, I try to make lunches appealing to my kids. The majority of the items in this menu are healthy options that the kids (or at least one kid) likes, and are easy for me as a parent to put together in the mornings. The kids have pizza day at school on Fridays so we only need four meal ideas each week. Continue reading “School Lunch Ideas”

Frugal Fridays

As part of our journey to becoming debt free, one of the things our family has implemented is a fairly strict grocery budget (among other budgets). Unlike utilities and mortgage, the grocery budget is something that I feel we have much more control of. We are in charge of the meals we cook, the ingredients we pick, the stores we choose to shop at, and whether or not to use coupons, store discounts or take advantage of the promotions that are being offered.Continue reading “Frugal Fridays”

Qeema Paratha tutorial by Big A

Phase 1 of Big A (My 9 year old daughter) learning to make paratha/chapatti-

In this phase of paratha making, I will only be teaching her how to roll out the dough

(The dough is kneaded and ready for her to use – and since she is making a stuffed bread, I have already made the meat filling as well- she will shred the cheese before starting her paratha)

To make the dough: Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon ghee (or oil) to 2 cups ofContinue reading “Qeema Paratha tutorial by Big A”
